Catholic Prayers and Devotions

Church Year Prayers, Novenas, and Other Prayers

We have compiled a comprehensive collection of Catholic prayers, devotions, and even a novena, although we also have many prayers from the Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and Protestant traditions. Additionally, we have prayers devoted to teachers, and pets, as well a compilation of basic Catholic prayers. Please take the time to leave a request on our prayer list and pray for those on it.

General Prayer Collections and Prayer Requests

Submit a Prayer, Intercession, or Thanksgiving to Our Prayer List!
Read Our Prayer List!

Please consider submitting your concerns and thanksgivings to us for. You need not give any personal information. We pray daily, publicly and privately. Evagrius, a Christian monk, said that "the one who truly prays is a theologian, and the true theologian is one who prays." Thus, "praying without ceasing" is not optional. We will pray for you and your concerns in our daily intercessions! Even though our website focuses on articles and essays, the prayer request page is at the heart of our ministry. Please join us in praying for the requests left by our visitors.

Basic Catholic Prayers in English and Latin
We have collected some of the most basic Catholic prayers, prayers most Catholics learn growing up, including the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be. We have included the Latin versions as well.

Prayers for Teachers, Students, and Schools!
You've asked for it, now here it is! Many of us here at Ancient and Future Catholics have a connection to the educational system, whether at college, elementary school, and so on. We are compiling prayers for teachers, many from ancient Christian sources, such as the writings of the Church Fathers.

Prayers for the Church Year

Advent Prayers and Collects
Advent is the season when we remember the anticipation of Christ's first coming, and we pray for the return of Christ again. It is not a kind of "Christmas before Christmas." These prayers reflect Advent's true meaning. We also have Advent Hymns and Canticles.

Immaculate Conception Prayers
These are prayers in honor of Mary's special conception without sin, rendering her a fitting vehicle to bear God Incarnate.

Christmas Prayers and Collects
We have collected Eastern and Western prayers for the ancient feast of the Nativity, which celebrates the Incarnation and birth of Christ.

Holy Family Prayers and Collects
We now have prayers for the family, as well as prayers relating to the Feast of the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.

Epiphany Prayers and Collects
We have compiled various prayers for the feast of the Epiphany, the feast following Christmas when we celebrate the manifestation of Christ to the gentiles, symbolized in the visitation of the Magi.

Candlemas Prayers and Collects
The feast of the Presentation of our Lord (also known as Candlemas or the Feast of the Purification of Mary) is an important feast of the Church. We have prayers for the feast.

St. Patrick's Day Prayers
Saint Patrick's Day is a popular Christian holiday that many non-Christians even celebrate. These Saint Patrick's Day Prayers are provided to help you celebrate this feast of the patron saint of Ireland.

Prayers for Lent
We have compiled various prayers from the East and West for the Lenten season. Also check out our Ash Wednesday Prayers, specifically collected for the first day of Lent.

Annunciation Prayers and Collects
We have compiled various prayers for the feast of the Annunciation, when the angel Gabriel told the Virgin Mary she would bear God's Son. We also celebrate Jesus' conception on this day.

Easter (Pascha) Prayers
Similar to our Lent Prayers, these prayers are designed for the 50 day season of Easter.

Prayers for the Feast of the Ascension
These prayers help us enter into the mystery of Christ's glorious ascension into heaven 40 days after his resurrection.

Pentecost Prayers and Collects
This is a collection of Pentecost prayers, some old, and some newer. These may be used during the day of Pentecost, or during the octave of Pentecost, the 8 day extension of Pentecost immediately following the feast. Of course, they can be used at all times of the year.

Prayers and Devotions for Ordinary Time
Ordinary Time is the time in the Church Year when it is not Advent, Christmas, Lent, or Easter. Far from being ordinary, this is a time to focus on deepening our relationship with Jesus. We also remember and celebrate the ordinary life of Jesus. Jesus did extraordinary things for sure, but he also did many of the day-to-day tasks we do, and thus sanctified them too.

Prayers to the Trinity and for Trinity Sunday
We now have prayers to the most Holy Trinity, which are appropriate for Trinity Sunday, but also every day of the year.

Communion Prayers and Prayers for Corpus Christi
In celebration we have collected some of the greatest communion prayers and Eucharistic devotions from all traditions. There are quite a few here and will deepen your devotion to our Lord.

Prayers for the Feast of the Assumption / Dormition of Mary
These are prayers in honor of Mary's leaving this life in an exceptional manner.

Prayer for All Hallows Eve (Halloween)
Don't laugh! Halloween is the vigil of All Saints, i.e. the Eve of All Saints Day. Far from being Satanic, the Eve of All Saints is a time to mock and fight the forces of evil. These prayers are all related to overcoming the evils of the devil.

Prayers for All Saints Day
The Church celebrates every saint, known and unknown once a year. However we join our prayers to that of the saints on a daily basis. Here are some prayers thanking God for the saints and asking their prayers on our behalf (much like I ask you to pray for me, even though we both go directly to Jesus as well).

Prayers for All Souls Day and for the Souls in Purgatory
Christians have been praying for their departed brothers and sisters since the beginning of Christianity, borrowing the practice from Judaism. These prayers pray for the departed souls and help us commemorate All Souls Day.

Prayers for the Feast of Christ the King
This is a Western feast celebrating Christ as just and merciful ruler over all creation. These prayers relate to this reality.

Litanies, Novenas, and Various Church Prayers

A Novena For Healing to Christ the Great Physician
This is a Novena derived from the writings of St. Ignatius of Antioch, a first century Christian bishop and martyr.

The Seven Penitential Psalms (in English)
The Seven Penitential Psalms (in Latin)

These 7 psalms have been traditionally designated as the primary penitential psalms, generally used a lot during Lent, but are certainly appropriate during other times of the year.

The Litany of the Precious Blood
The Great Litany (Anglican-Use)

Both of these litanies are suitable for Lent and other penitential seasons. The Litany of the Precious Blood focuses on Jesus' death and shedding of blood. The Anglican-Use Great litany lists virtually every sin, evil, and class of wrongdoing we might need to confess. The version here is a modified version of the Litany used by Anglican parishes that have become Catholic. For more information see Pastoral Provision.

The Decalogue
These are the ten commandments in prayer form. Praying the ten commandments is a traditional liturgical expression, and many find praying these ancient commandments to be helpful and fulfilling, especially during the Lenten season.

Miscellaneous Prayers and Devotions

Lighting of the Advent Wreath
We have provided information and history about the advent wreath, as well as giving prayers and scripture readings for each week of Advent.

Prayers and Blessings for Pets and Other Animals
A collection of prayers and blessings for pets and other animals, from the Catholic Tradition.

A Prayer for Courage
Written after 9-11, this prayer asks for courage
